Welcome back to The Fertility Dietitian Podcast.

Today we're talking about four vitamins that don't receive nearly enough attention when it comes to fertility: vitamins A, D, E, and K.

These are known as fat-soluble vitamins because they're absorbed alongside dietary fat and stored in the body for later use. Unlike vitamin C and the B vitamins, which must be replenished regularly, these nutrients can be stored and used when needed.

If you've been told that everything looks "normal," but you're still struggling with infertility, recurrent miscarriage, poor egg quality, low sperm quality, or autoimmune conditions, this episode is for you.

These vitamins play essential roles in hormone production, ovulation, sperm development, implantation, placental development, and your baby's earliest stages of growth.

Yet I rarely see them properly evaluated or optimized before someone begins IVF.

That's a missed opportunity.

Vitamin A and Reproductive Health

Vitamin A has developed an unfortunate reputation over the years.

Many women are told to avoid it completely because of concerns about birth defects.

The research tells a much more balanced story.

Vitamin A is absolutely essential before and during pregnancy. The concern isn't meeting your daily needs. The concern is taking extremely high supplemental doses for prolonged periods.

Vitamin A regulates more than 500 genes involved in reproduction, immune function, and fetal development.

It supports:

  • Healthy ovarian function

  • Egg maturation

  • Progesterone production

  • Implantation

  • Placental development

  • Healthy sperm production

  • Embryonic organ development

  • Cervical mucus

  • Uterine lining health

  • Immune function within the reproductive tract

Vitamin A is also a powerful antioxidant that helps protect eggs and sperm from oxidative stress—one of the major drivers of declining fertility with age.

For men, vitamin A is essential for spermatogenesis, the process of producing healthy sperm.

Research consistently shows that deficiency reduces sperm production and impairs sperm maturation.

How Much Vitamin A Do You Need?

Women generally need around 700 micrograms per day, while men need approximately 900 micrograms daily.

The upper intake level is 3,000 micrograms, or about 10,000 IU, from preformed vitamin A.

It's important to understand that this upper limit does not equal toxicity.

Published cases of vitamin A toxicity typically involve doses around 100,000 IU daily over months or years or the use of prescription retinoid medications.

Food-based vitamin A toxicity is extremely rare.

The richest food sources include:

  • Beef liver

  • Chicken liver

  • Egg yolks

  • Full-fat dairy

  • Butter

  • Cod liver oil

These foods provide retinol, the active form of vitamin A.

Plant foods contain beta-carotene, which must first be converted into retinol.

For some people, especially those with thyroid dysfunction, poor gut health, zinc deficiency, certain genetic variations, or poor metabolic health, that conversion is surprisingly inefficient.

That's one reason I encourage nutrient-dense animal foods before conception whenever possible.

Vitamin D and Fertility

Although we call it a vitamin, vitamin D functions more like a hormone.

Nearly every reproductive tissue contains vitamin D receptors, including the ovaries, uterus, placenta, testes, and sperm.

Vitamin D influences more than 1,000 genes throughout the body.

Research has linked vitamin D deficiency with:

  • Lower pregnancy rates

  • Higher miscarriage risk

  • Poorer IVF outcomes

Vitamin D also supports implantation by helping regulate the immune system.

Successful implantation requires the immune system to recognize an embryo without attacking it, and vitamin D helps create that balanced immune environment.

For men, adequate vitamin D has been associated with improved sperm motility and testosterone production, although research suggests correcting deficiencies is far more beneficial than taking excessive doses once levels are already sufficient.

Optimizing Vitamin D Levels

The recommended daily allowance is 600 IU, but that's designed to prevent deficiency—not necessarily optimize fertility.

Most fertility research suggests maintaining vitamin D blood levels between 50 and 80 ng/mL.

For many adults, achieving those levels requires somewhere between 2,000 and 4,000 IU daily, although laboratory testing should always guide supplementation.

Food sources include:

  • Salmon

  • Sardines

  • Herring

  • Cod liver oil

  • Egg yolks

  • Fortified dairy products

Whenever possible, sunlight remains the best source.

Vitamin E: The Overlooked Fertility Antioxidant

Vitamin E may be one of the most overlooked fertility nutrients.

Its primary role is protecting cell membranes from oxidative damage.

Eggs and sperm are especially vulnerable to oxidative stress caused by inflammation, toxins, poor sleep, chronic stress, infections, and environmental exposures.

Vitamin E helps neutralize those free radicals before they damage reproductive cells.

In women, vitamin E supports:

  • Ovarian function

  • Endometrial health

  • Blood flow to the uterus

Some research also suggests improved endometrial thickness in women with thin uterine linings.

For men, vitamin E has consistently been associated with improved sperm quality, particularly when combined with other antioxidants such as vitamin C and selenium.

The best food sources include:

  • Sunflower seeds

  • Hazelnuts

  • Almonds

  • Avocados

  • Extra virgin olive oil

  • Eggs

  • Trout

Vitamin K: The Missing Piece

Vitamin K is probably the least appreciated fertility vitamin.

Most people associate it with bone health, but its role extends much further.

Vitamin K activates proteins involved in calcium regulation throughout the body, including reproductive tissues.

It also works alongside vitamins A and D.

Vitamin D increases calcium absorption.

Vitamin K directs calcium where it belongs.

Vitamin A regulates gene expression.

Together, these nutrients support hormone production, immune function, healthy fetal development, and reproductive health.

Emerging research also suggests vitamin K may support ovarian function and testosterone production.

Excellent food sources include:

  • Spinach

  • Kale

  • Swiss chard

  • Parsley

  • Egg yolks

  • Gouda

  • Brie

  • Grass-fed butter

  • Liver

Why Gallbladder Health Matters

We can't talk about fat-soluble vitamins without talking about the gallbladder.

If you've had your gallbladder removed—or it's not functioning well—you may absorb fewer fat-soluble nutrients.

Your gallbladder stores and concentrates bile, which is released when you eat fat.

Bile helps emulsify fats so digestive enzymes can break them down and your body can absorb vitamins A, D, E, and K, along with DHA, omega-3 fats, and CoQ10.

Without adequate bile flow, nutrient absorption becomes much less efficient.

I see this frequently.

Someone is eating an excellent diet and taking high-quality supplements, but testing still shows deficiencies because the missing piece isn't intake—it's absorption.

If you've had your gallbladder removed or suspect it isn't functioning well, it may be helpful to work with a practitioner to evaluate digestive support.

This could include:

  • Eating moderate amounts of fat throughout the day

  • Supporting bile flow

  • Addressing gut dysfunction

  • Using bile salts when appropriate

  • Evaluating pancreatic function

  • Testing nutrient status instead of assuming

Building a Fertility-Focused Foundation

If you're trying to conceive, focus on real food first.

Include:

  • Eggs

  • Fatty fish two to three times each week

  • Quality dairy

  • Liver in moderation

  • Nuts and seeds

  • Avocados

  • Leafy greens

  • Healthy fats like butter and olive oil

These vitamins require dietary fat for proper absorption.

Adding healthy fats to your meals helps your body utilize the nutrients you're already eating.

Vitamin D is also one of the few nutrients we can easily measure through blood work.

If your level is low, address it before pregnancy whenever possible.

Aim for optimal levels—not simply the low end of the normal laboratory range.

Think Beyond Supplements

Supplements can be helpful, but they're only one piece of the picture.

If gut health is compromised, you've had your gallbladder removed, or you're living with inflammatory bowel disease, celiac disease, chronic diarrhea, or other digestive conditions, absorption deserves just as much attention as intake.

Your body can't use nutrients it never absorbs.

Remember, fertility isn't built by one miracle supplement.

It's built by thousands of biological processes happening every second.

These fat-soluble vitamins help those processes function the way they were designed to.

They support healthy eggs and sperm, implantation, immune function, and your baby's development.

That's why I spend so much time helping clients build better biology before pregnancy instead of chasing the latest supplement trend.

When your body has the raw materials it needs, it often performs exactly the way it was designed to.
